Rotavirus causes acute gastroenteritis, which can cause intense diarrhea and vomiting in infants and children worldwide. There are two rotavirus vaccines currently licensed to vaccinate babies in the United States:
RotaTeq® (RV5) is administered in 3 doses at the ages of 2 months, 4 months and 6 months
Rotarix® (RV1) is administered in 2 doses at the ages of 2 months and 4 months.
This first dose of either vaccine is most effective if it is given before the child is 15 weeks old. Children should receive all doses of rotavirus vaccine before they reach 8 months of age.
Both vaccines are oral (taken by mouth and ingested). The rotavirus vaccine can be given at the same time as other childhood vaccines.

The CDC continues to recommend that babies receive the rotavirus vaccine. The benefits of the vaccine far outweigh the small risk of intussusception. Thanks to the rotavirus vaccine, there has been a drastic reduction in hospitalizations and visits to the emergency room due to rotavirus disease.
